ayurveda for asthma

It is the use of the standard medical treatment (allopathic medicine) combined Ayurveda (Indian medical science) with ayurvedic herbs, yoga, pranayama or breathing exercise, patient based unique education to augment and improve the overall health of the patient.

Using the best of two different approaches of Eastern and Western medicine and integrating for the overall benefit for the patient to overall decrease and/or control of the symptoms, decrease number exacerbations of asthma or COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), decrease the ER visits or hospitalization and to decrease the doses of medication uses and hopefully to eliminate it if possible. Many of the changes can be seen in most of the patient if compliant but may not be the all for everyone. Early phase of the asthma be easily managed but chronic asthma takes longer time to come under control.

We provide a very unique way to integrating based on the evidence in ayurvedic literature and its use and current treatment used. As asthma is not a new disease and been there for generation and over hundreds and thousands of years its treatment modalities is described in ayurvedic literature. The literatures are hundreds and thousands of years old in Sanskrit and is used even today in India and all over the world with practitioners of ayurveda with good results.

By doing the integrative pulmonary and sleep medicine clinical approach we have seen improvement in our patients. This is developed by the author and is not an FDA approved method of treatment. But, in our clinical practice and treating patients over 10 years we have seen the integrative medical approach work better than a standard approach.

The way our approach differs from other pulmonologists’ approach is the option of proving the alternative medical treatment approach like ayurvedic treatment for asthma and COPD. This is integrated with the standard asthma or COPD treatment with inhalers or nebulizers and other medication used routinely. So, patient gets the standard treatment for asthma or COPD but as they improve with the ayurvedic treatment then the need for the inhalers and medication decreases. Then, we try to take them off the number of inhalers or nebulizer and place them on minimal dose. If significantly improved, then discontinue the inhalers and place them on as needed basis. Goal is to overall improve body, mind and emotions and with that breathing improves. Pranayma or breathing exercise of yoga is a key that improves that we have seen in our practice.

All this is done with clinical monitoring the patients and repeating their pulmonary function test, blood gases, x-rays, CT scans and desaturation test for the evaluation of hypoxia or low oxygen as needed. Patients with bronchial asthma and COPD are clinically monitored and are reassessed and their medication, inhalers, herbs, diets, sleep, and side effect of medication been monitored and unique education is provided with the visit that is pertaining to the person’s condition.

No two patients in our practice of bronchial asthma or COPD get the same treatment. It is individualized treatment based on the genetics of the person and toxin build up and other parameters used in ayurveda. ayurvedic diet helps to decrease the exacerbation as it is body type based diet so it varies from person to person. Diet is a key for improvement, so is the yoga and pranayama and other regular exercise with relaxation and good sleep hygiene. The response time we have seen is one to two years with this treatment approach.
